Growing Old Gracefully??

Growing Old Gracefully??

Ok ok ok I admit it. I’m not 26!! I’m 26 for a second time around and oh, by-the-way, I’m not really 5’ tall either, I’m 10’ tall. Yes, half the age and twice the height, it suits me just fine thank you. ( I seem to have repeated that  a few times but, Oh well, pssst I’m actually 52 with sometimers) I have been told that I should, like any lady, grow old gracefully” Uhhhmmm what does that statement mean? Does it mean that I should start to get out the rocking chair and knit? Does it mean that I should look back into my music and remember the music of my “youth” Not so much. This is a blog about me!!
It has taken me a long time to grow this young and I am not willing to give it up without kicking and screaming, dancing and having fun all the way back to old. I’m not talking about dressing age inappropriate, nor doing things that are termed immature. What I am talking about, is living my life in the now to the best of my funability. Growing old is not exactly an option, you are going to get older no matter what. Somehow, I have no idea how, with every second of the day we age.  What I do know is that, people grow older but, we have choices. We have choices to do less, care less, and be less and most people do for that matter. They have talked themselves into believing they are too tired, don’t have enough time, have seen enough or done enough. Poppy cock!! Life is about the living, it is about discovering or doing something new each and every day.
Try rediscovering yourself. We can change our diets, start exercising, start exercising our minds, change your hair do, and find the new improved and very experienced you. Believe me, this is fun. Once you start on your journey of growing old the way you want, you will find many along the way. I’m just a baby baby boomer and there are many of us that are ready to retire from careers and not from work or life. We see the changes and challenges as fun, exhilarating and rejuvenating.
Have any of you listened to today’s music? If not, why not? It’s fun, it’s fresh and you can enjoy the old and the new. My kids think I am a total lunatic at times, with the tunes cranked in the kitchen dancing away as I make dinner but, their friends all wish their mom was more like me. We’re not talking about teenage kids either here. My kids have grown and left and now have kids of their own. Yes, Grammy cranks the tunes up and dances with her grandbabies. Nothing is better to hear... “Grammy can we do it again”
In short, I am short, and life is too short. Do yourself a favor and grow young again as soon as your kids leave the house. Enjoy not only life but yourself. Rich or poor it’s a mind set and there is no getting out of this life alive but there is a way to have fun and feel incredible all the way to the end.

Have a funtazmagorical day and Always Keep the Faith.

Diabetes and Heart Disease

Heart disease and Diabetes are related to nutrition and both can be prevented or helped by the same foods and supplements.  Type 2 diabetes is normally preceded by decades of slowly increasing insulin, blood sugar, and belt-size (.. and it is always healthier to sit on your fat than have your fat sit on you).  Early prevention is very effective but there come a point when insulin production permanently breaks down.  Smart nutrition (and portion control) can first prevent overweight and diabetes, and eventually heart disease.

Both conditions are epidemic with 1 in 13 Americans and 1 in 3 of those over age 60 developing 'adult' diabetes.  Most will develop heart, kidney, nerve and blood vessel diseases for an amazing 1/4th of total health care costs!  Other countries have similar increasing rates.  Later-in-life diabetes (during pregnancy being a warning) is an eventual one-way track to heart disease.

What makes a diabetic?  Simply put: when your pre-breakfast blood sugar (plasma glucose) gets over 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L).  Another measure is when 2 hours after taking a dose of glucose the blood level is still over 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L), with over 140 (7.8) starting to suggest a problem.  Pre-breakfast 95 (5.3) is good, under 36 (2) is seriously low blood sugar, while above 180 (10) a safety-valve opens that sends glucose to the urine.  To confuse anybody, the numbers changed from mg to the 18 times smaller mmole, they increase by 14% between 'blood' and 'plasma' in syringe samples -but the numbers for 'blood drop' and 'syringe-plasma' are similar.  However, it's the big picture that counts, not the decimal points of the reading.  This is one area where a blood test is important since serious organ or foot damage (!) can happen early.

Fish and Omega-3 Acids

Fish and Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Fish is a good source of protein and, unlike fatty meat products, it’s not high in saturated fat. Fish is also a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids benefit the heart of healthy people, and those at high risk of — or who have — cardiovascular disease. Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids decrease risk of arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats), which can lead to sudden death.  Omega-3 fatty acids also decrease triglyceride levels, slow growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque, and lower blood pressure (slightly).
omega 3
Go fish
The American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish) at least two times (two servings) a week. Each serving is 3.5 ounce cooked, or about ¾ cup of flaked fish. Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, lake trout, sardines and albacore tuna are high in omega-3 fatty acids.
Increasing omega-3 fatty acid consumption through foods is preferable. However, those with coronary artery disease, may not get enough omega-3 by diet alone. These people may want to talk to their doctor about supplements. And for those with high triglycerides, even larger doses could help.
Patients taking more than 3 grams of omega-3 fatty acids from capsules should do so only under a physician’s care. High intakes could cause excessive bleeding in some people. Check out Fish 101 for specific consumption recommendations.
Eating fish, is there a catch?
Some types of fish may contain high levels of mercury, PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), dioxins and other environmental contaminants. Levels of these substances are generally highest in older, larger, predatory fish and marine mammals.
The benefits and risks of eating fish vary depending on a person’s stage of life.
  • Children and pregnant women are advised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to avoid eating those fish with the potential for the highest level of mercury contamination (e.g., shark, swordfish, king mackerel or tilefish); to eat up to 12 ounces (two average meals) per week of a variety of fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury (e.g., canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, catfish); and check local advisories about the safety of fish caught by family and friends in local lakes, rivers and coastal areas.
  • For middle-aged and older men and postmenopausal women, the benefits of fish consumption far outweigh the potential risks when the amount of fish are eaten is within the recommendations established by the FDA and Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Eating a variety of fish will help minimize any potentially adverse effects due to environmental pollutants.

Clean People Feel Morally Superior

By Olivia Solon, Wired UK
A new study shows that people feel morally cleansed when they are physically clean, and as such are more inclined to judge others more harshly.
The study, with the somewhat Victorian-sounding name of “A clean self can render harsh moral judgment” was conducted by Chen-Bo Zhong at Northwestern University and appears in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.
Some 58 undergrads were invited to a lab filled with spotless new equipment. Half of the students were asked to clean their hands with antiseptic wipe, so as not to soil the shiny surfaces. Afterward all the students rated the morality of six societal issues — smoking, illegal drug use, pornography, profane language, littering and adultery — on an 11-point scale ranging from very moral to very immoral. Those who’d wiped their hands made far-harsher judgments than those who didn’t.
“Participants who cleansed their hands before rating the social issues judged these issues to be more morally wrong compared to those who did not cleanse their hands,” the researchers report.

In a follow-up study, hundreds of participants were told to read a short passage that began, “My hair feels clean and light. My breath is fresh. My clothes are pristine and like new,” made harsher moral judgments about 16 social issues compared to those primed to feel dirty by reading a passage that read, “My hair feels oily and heavy. My breath stinks. I feel so dirty.”
A third study was identical to the second, except that after reading either the dirty or clean passage of text, the 136 undergrad participants also ranked themselves against their peers on several factors including intelligence, attractiveness and moral character.
Those who held a self-image of cleanliness and purity made more harsh moral judgements on social issues. Crucially, this association was entirely mediated by their having an inflated sense of moral virtue compared with their peers. (By contrast, reading the clean vs. dirty text made no difference to self -rankings on the other factors).
Acts of cleanliness have not only the potential to shift our moral pendulum to a more virtuous self, but also license harsher moral judgment of others,” Zhong and his team concluded.
